Mismatched vocabulary

Standardized tests like the TOEFL, SAT, GMAT, and GRE, want to check if you can read and write correctly.  One of the recurrent ways they do this is by trying to confuse you with questions about very similar words.  Words that are constantly misspelled and pronounced.  Here is an example.

An outspoken advocate of reform, Olympia has long worked to ________ change in what others see as an irreparably corrupt system.
Select two choices: censure forego prompt effect impede hinder

The correct answer here is "prompt" and "effect." My students will learn this differences. I will help them understand the difference between the terms.  Another question could be.

Professional writers realize that ( they cannot hope to effect ) the reader precisely as they wish without care and practice in the use of words.

A)as it is
B)they cannot hope to have an effect on
C)they cannot hope to affect 

D)they cannot hope effecting
E)they cannot try to affect




The correct answer here is "they cannot hope to affect." In the second example we can see that it asks for you to correct the sentence, as it was written badly.  I can coach and give advice, with practice pupils will increase their understanding and proficiency.
