Good Practice for Standardized Tests

As far as Verbal sections are concerned, the focus should be on reading comprehension of literature.  That means reading excerpts of prominent non-fiction, novels, short stories, and poems.  Being able to understand them thoroughly, and elicit explanations on their meaning.  If you want to communicate effectively in business, you need to increase your reading comprehension skills, as you need to understand dense textbooks. All through professional life readings such as reports, market research, or due diligence analyses, need you to able to write about what you read.

Grammar will be tested as well. A section of the tests has incorrect sentences that need to be readjusted by choosing the correct sentence pattern from the available options. There are variants to these type of exercise, in which you will complete a sentence by filling in the blank space. The key for excelling in these exercises is to read a lot of English works during your school years. By reading more, you would have grammar ingrained into your mindset.

Vocabulary is tested, the assessment puts the terms in context.  Many phonemes have many different denotations, but the tests focus on the one or two most salient ones.  You should try to read through lists of common advanced-level words, it is very laborious, but in the end you will need to memorize many of them that are not used in everyday speech.

The last section on the Verbal tests is the writing sample. The tests will ask you to write up one essay. It will assign a small excerpt of a literature piece, and give a writing prompt. The classic test essay, has one introductory paragraph, three in the body, and a conclusion. You should be able to finish the essay within 25 minutes.  This is ample time, the test taker should just learn the patterns of model essays and practice with guidance.

A good mark on the Verbal test, is attainable following a set of general guidelines.  All during high school years and your professional career, you should read fiction or non-fiction, memorize and practice term lists, and write several five paragraph essays with guidance. Studying for the test using the prep books will refresh your memory.
